You can upload Microsoft Word files (.docx and .docm) directly to your reMarkable. A Word file can never upload untouched, so the app always converts it to something your reMarkable can read - what it converts to depends on whether you have a Pro license.
Uploading a Word document works for everyone, on every platform. Converting it to a typeset PDF or an editable Notebook requires a Klass-RM Uploader Pro license.
What happens without a Pro license
Every Word document you upload is converted to a clean, formatted EPUB - free, for everyone, on every platform. Nothing is ever blocked. You just do not get to choose PDF or Notebook without Pro.
Converting to PDF or Notebook (Pro)
With a Pro license, dropping or picking a .docx/.docm file - or choosing Convert Word Document... from the File menu (Mac) - opens an import sheet where you choose the output format:
- EPUB - free, always available.
- PDF - a device-sized, typeset PDF with a cover, chapter breaks, and proper paragraph styling. Requires Pro.
- Notebook - an editable reMarkable Notebook you can write on freely. Requires Pro and a reMarkable Connect subscription.
Rows you are not entitled to appear locked in the sheet, so you can always see what upgrading would unlock. Once you have Pro, PDF is preselected.
The PDF output shares its typesetting engine with EPUB-to-PDF conversion - font, text size, margins, line spacing, PDF bookmarks, and an optional table of contents page are all configurable, and you can apply a saved settings profile from the same picker used there. Only the main app's drop zone, picker, and dedicated menu action offer a choice. Every other surface - both share extensions, watched folders, Shortcuts/Siri, the Advanced API/MCP Server, and website links - always produces the free EPUB (or a Notebook if Connect applies), since there is no UI on those surfaces to ask what you want.
What is preserved and what is not
Word documents are parsed with the app's own reader - no Microsoft software required. Supported:
- Paragraphs and headings (works with non-English Word style names too)
- Bold and italic text
- Nested bullet and numbered lists
- Tables (each cell becomes its own paragraph - there is no grid layout)
- Inline images
- Explicit page breaks (these become chapter boundaries in the PDF output)
- Tracked changes - insertions are kept, deletions are dropped
Not supported:
.doc,.rtf,.odt, and.pagesfiles - only.docxand.docmare readable- Headers, footers, footnotes, and comments
- Shapes, SmartArt, and charts
- Password-protected files - you will see a clear error rather than a silent failure
Which should you choose?
Use EPUB for reading and light annotation - it reflows and works for everyone.
Use PDF when you want a proper typeset document with a fixed layout, a table of contents, and bookmarks - good for reports, manuscripts, and anything you want to look like a real printed page.
Use Notebook when you want to write and edit freely on the content, not just annotate it - requires Pro and Connect.
