Export any document already on your reMarkable to a file on your Mac - PDF, PNG, SVG, Markdown, or Highlights - rendered locally, with no server round trip. Reached from the cloud file browser's inspector: Export... for one document, or Export All... for a multi-document selection. Mac only.
Formats
- PDF - the document rendered exactly as it looks on your tablet, including your handwriting.
- PNG and SVG - one image per page.
- Markdown - typed text plus highlighted text ranges. Highlighted passages appear as blockquotes so they stay visually distinct from typed text.
- Highlights - only the highlighted ranges, as plain lines with no formatting.
Markdown and Highlights only pick up typed text and genuine highlighted text ranges - a freehand highlighter-pen stroke does not count, and neither works on the older V5 page format.
Free vs. Pro
Free: exactly one page of one document. Choose "Pages..." in the export sheet and enter a single page number. A multi-page document defaults there with page 1 already filled in.
Pro required for: a page range, a whole document, or exporting more than one document at once (Export All...).
reMarkable Connect is never required for any of this - it is pure local rendering of content your account already owns, not a server-side conversion.
The gate is checked both when you submit and again right before each job actually runs, so a license that lapses between queuing and running blocks just that job - it shows as "Blocked" and retries automatically once your license is active again.
The Export Queue
Submitting an export adds one job per document to a persistent Export Queue window, reachable from the cloud browser toolbar (which shows a live count badge) or the File menu. The queue keeps draining even if you close the sheet or the browser window, and pending jobs survive quitting the app - they resume automatically the next time you open it.
Each job shows progress, and you can Cancel, Retry, choose a new destination folder if the original became inaccessible, Show in Finder, or Clear Finished.
Skipping empty files
For Markdown/Highlights exports only, toggle Skip files with no typed text or highlights (off by default) in the export sheet. When on, a document with nothing to render writes no file at all, instead of the usual placeholder saying no text or highlights were found.
Output naming
PDF, Markdown, and Highlights are each a single <name>.<ext> file (<name>-highlights.md when you export both Markdown and Highlights for the same document). PNG/SVG for a single page is one flat file with the page number in the name; for two or more pages, a subfolder is created. Name collisions in the destination resolve Finder-style (Notes 2, Notes 3).
Known limitations
The export sheet itself explains these when they apply:
- A document with no synced PDF component (most commonly an EPUB your tablet has never rendered) exports its handwriting and template only, without the book's own text. In practice this is rare - once your tablet has opened an EPUB, it normally has a rendered PDF component too.
- A document that has never been opened on your reMarkable (no recorded page count) cannot be exported yet - the Export action is greyed out with an explanation.
- Template documents and folders cannot be exported - there are no pages to export.
- Links within a PDF source page mostly carry forward (clickable URLs and same-document jump links), but external-file link annotations and a source PDF's own outline/bookmark tree are dropped when the page is redrawn.
Exporting from a backup
Any backed-up document (or a multi-document selection) can also be exported through this same queue, straight from a past snapshot in the Backups window. See the Cloud Backup and Restore page. The same free-single-page / Pro-beyond gate applies, and a backup-sourced export works even without a paired account - though it is blocked while its backup store is locked.
