Choosing a Format: PDF/ePub vs. reMarkable Notebook

When you upload a file, you can choose how it arrives on your reMarkable. There are two options: PDF/ePub (the default) and reMarkable Notebook. This page explains what each means and when to use which.

PDF/ePub (the default)

Choosing PDF/ePub uploads your file exactly as it is, without any conversion:

  • A PDF uploads as a PDF. You can read it and annotate it with your pen, but you cannot edit the text or move elements around.
  • An EPUB uploads as a reflowable document. reMarkable will display it in its own reader, and you can adjust text size.
  • An image is uploaded as-is.
  • A text or Markdown file is converted to a clean EPUB before uploading.
  • A web article is fetched, cleaned, and saved as an EPUB before uploading.

This option works for everyone - no special subscription or license needed.

reMarkable Notebook

Choosing reMarkable Notebook converts your file into an editable notebook format on the reMarkable. This means:

  • You can use the reMarkable's handwriting tools to write and draw anywhere on the page, as if on a blank notebook.
  • You can select and erase text.
  • The content becomes a native reMarkable document, not a locked PDF.

What can be converted to a Notebook:

  • Images
  • Web articles
  • Text and Markdown files
  • EPUB files

What cannot be converted to a Notebook:

  • PDFs - PDFs always upload as PDFs, even if you have Notebook selected. Converting a PDF does not produce an editable result, so the format choice is ignored for PDF files.

Requirements for Notebook conversion

Notebook conversion requires both of the following:

  1. A Klass-RM Uploader Pro license - see the Pro License page.
  2. A reMarkable Connect subscription - reMarkable's paid cloud plan.

If either is missing, the format selector will still be visible but the Notebook option will be disabled. An explanation appears next to it telling you what is needed.

Which should you choose?

Use PDF/ePub when:

  • You want to annotate a document without changing it.
  • You are uploading a PDF (it will always be a PDF anyway).
  • You do not have Connect or a Pro license.
  • You want a quick read of an article with your pen for notes.

Use reMarkable Notebook when:

  • You want to edit content, not just annotate it.
  • You are uploading an image, article, or text note and want it to be a proper notebook you can write in freely.
  • You have both a Pro license and Connect.

Where the format selector appears

The format selector appears in:

  • The main Klass-RM Uploader app window
  • The iOS share extension panel
  • The macOS share extension panel
  • The Print to reMarkable helper

In all cases, the selector shows both options but disables the Notebook option when requirements are not met.

Default format

The format you last used is remembered for next time. On first use, the default is PDF/ePub.
