Custom reMarkable Templates (.rmtemplate)

A .rmtemplate file is a zipped, custom-authored page template - the kind of thing you'd get from a template designer or build yourself. Uploading one syncs it to your reMarkable account and makes it available in your tablet's own template picker, alongside reMarkable's built-in templates.

No Klass-RM Uploader license is required. This is free, ad-hoc or as a template purchased from the Klass Paperless store.

The catch: reMarkable Connect with Methods

Uploading and syncing a custom template never requires anything from you. But selecting it on your tablet does - your reMarkable account needs an active Connect subscription with Methods. This is reMarkable's own requirement, not something Klass-RM Uploader imposes.

If your account does not have Connect with Methods, the app refuses the upload and shows an explanation, rather than letting it appear to succeed and then not show up on your tablet. This is checked both before the upload starts and again right before it commits, so a template queued while you were offline cannot quietly fail later.

If you are signed out or have not yet paired your reMarkable, you are prompted to pair - you are never told to buy Connect just because you have not signed in yet.

Uploading a custom template

A .rmtemplate file uploads from anywhere a PDF does:

  • The file picker or File menu
  • Drag and drop
  • "Open With" and deep links
  • The iOS and macOS share extensions
  • Watched Folders (Mac)
  • Shortcuts/Siri and the Advanced API/MCP Server

Once uploaded, open your reMarkable's template picker on any page to find it.

Updating a template you already uploaded

If you upload a revised version of a template whose manifest.json declares a stable packageId, the new upload updates it in place in your template picker instead of adding a second, duplicate entry. A package that does not declare a packageId lands as a new document every time you upload it.

Firmware requirement

The template syncs to every device on your account regardless of firmware version. But it only appears in the template picker on reMarkable software 3.17 or newer. If your tablet does not show it, check for a software update on the device.

Custom templates from the Klass Paperless Store

If you download a .rmtemplate you purchased from the Klass Paperless store through the app's in-app Store browser, the same Connect-with-Methods requirement applies to sending it. Download always stays available - you own the file either way - but the Send button shows a lock and explanation if your account is not eligible. See the Browsing the Klass Paperless Store In-App page.

Troubleshooting

The upload was refused with a Connect error:

  • Your reMarkable account needs an active Connect subscription with Methods for a custom template to be selectable. Check your subscription at my.remarkable.com.

The template uploaded but does not show up on my tablet:

  • Check that your reMarkable software is 3.17 or newer. The template syncs regardless of firmware, but only appears in the picker on 3.17+.
